Tips for Creating a Gallery Wall

I’ve found that a gallery wall is a fantastic way to collect paintings from my artist pals and artists I admire.

So if you’re looking to create a similar look, I’m sharing my tips for creating a gallery wall!

Types of Gallery Walls

  1. Symmetrical: Artwork is the same size and displayed in a grid. Framing is consistent.

  2. Asymmetrical: A mix of varied sizes and framing techniques. The overall shape is more organic, but should still be visually appealing.

Personally, I love having an asymmetrical gallery wall in our home because it gives me flexibility to move artwork around and add to my collection over time.

Tips for Creating an Asymmetrical Gallery Wall

  • Collect artwork you love!

  • Lay your artwork out on the floor first to play with the arrangement. Or you can use painter’s tape to lay out your arrangement on the wall!

  • Try to have a couple of larger pieces to anchor the space, mixed in with smaller pieces.

  • Spread out your colors (this applies to framing, too), subject matters and sizes.

  • Don’t be scared to mix in different styles and materials!
