Let’s Talk Commissions
As I’ll be working primarily on commissions over the next few months, I thought I’d share a commission I’m loving from earlier this year. A spectacular sunset over the Bald Head Island creek!
I met the Jellisons last July, and was able to catch up with them in early 2025 to tour their beautiful home on Bald Head Island, NC, and chat about a commission for their master suite.
We decided on a 30x40 in. painting on birchwood panel. Their space features a soft color palette with neutrals and seafoam greens — the perfect backdrop. A commissioned painting presented an opportunity to bring in rich, vibrant and bold colors.
I love how this piece turned out, and now the Jellisons get to enjoy this marsh view every day!
The Commission Process
After I meet with a client, whether it’s in-person or via a video call, I put together a proposal outlining all of the details of the project. Once that’s approved, a signed contract and 50% deposit officially books their commission spot. Then I get to work on the painting when their commission spot comes up on my calendar! (I typically take about seven or eight commissions a year, and book them a few months in advance.)
I love that initial commission meeting where I get to know the client and we work together to brainstorm ideas for their project. Then at the end it’s really special to present their finished painting, and they get to see all of their ideas come to life!
