My Story
A creative bookworm, I studied journalism with a concentration in graphic design at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; after which, I worked for nearly a decade as a graphic designer. I devoted my free time to painting, which eventually led to the career I have today, as a full-time artist!
I’m Sarah Jane, an artist based in Wilmington, NC, where I paint from a sunshine-filled art studio with my snuggly golden retriever. I also take my easel on the road to explore this beautiful world and paint its wonder!
I love the tactile nature of painting and working with my hands. I see the canvas as a window into the world, and color as the language. With nods to impressionism and expressionism, I’ve found a way of creating that feels happy and free.
My process often starts by wandering through a landscape as a quiet observer. I document moments of joy using the materials I have on-hand. Sometimes that looks like snapping a quick photo, or sketching. Other times, I might enjoy a longer painting session at my plein air easel. These small acts of creativity, and noticing beauty in everyday moments, become the seeds for bigger projects that develop in the studio.
Art has opened up my world. It’s a constant adventure that I’m excited to share with you!
