Dreaming of Bald Head Island
I love when a painting beautifully pulls a room together, and tells a meaningful story as well!
Colleen Riff and I quickly bonded over a shared love for Bald Head Island, NC, and set to work planning the perfect painting for her new home! Read on for a fun Q&A with Colleen where she shares what it was like to commission a painting.
Q: Why did you decide to commission a painting?
A: I recently purchased my first home, and as I grew up spending my summers on Bald Head Island, I knew I wanted to commission a painting that encapsulated my favorite place! I have so many great memories of the island, and I even used to volunteer at the lighthouse when I was younger. I love photographing Old Baldy, especially at sunset and wanted to commission a painting that would have both of those features and allow me to bring in color to my living room which is primarily blues and whites while harmonizing with the colors in that room.
Q: What was your favorite part of the commission process?
A: Everything about the process was so seamless and smooth! Sarah was very easy to communicate and work with and got back to me quickly after my inquiry! Sarah understood my vision right away, and as we discussed it I became very excited to see the final painting! My favorite part was seeing the time lapsed video she sent of the painting from start to finish. I loved seeing it all come together and all of the layers of color! That video made me so excited to receive my painting! I think I showed it to everyone!
Q: Do you have any advice for someone considering booking a commission?
A: Do it! Definitely have a vision in mind, we took some artistic liberties as I did not have a photograph of the angle that I wanted, and I absolutely love how it turned out. That was the fun part to be able to select the colors I wanted and customize the painting to be exactly as I wanted. It is also nice to have a piece made just for you! It perfectly captured everything I wanted and is the perfect addition to my new home. It is also nice to know that you have a one of a kind piece that is tailored just to you and a story behind the art!
“I am obsessed with how it turned out! I love the colors and how it adds brightness to my living room. I love that even in my kitchen while cooking or having my cup of coffee I can see it and it makes me smile. Sarah so appropriately named it “Dreaming of BHI” and I thought even the name was so perfect! Having grown up there and the house officially selling this year the painting feels even more special and such a reminder of the place I love. It was hung up after I got home from my last trip to BHI and definitely encapsulates so many memories! I am so happy that I commissioned this and it was amazing to work with Sarah! Highly recommend and would work with her again!”
